The name “Firlands” first appears in print in early June 1899.51 The reason for choosing the name is unknown.
Forster certainly projected the air of a successful rancher.

Frances Ewart Forster was just one year old when her father, Harold Ernest Forster, … requested that the Chief Geographer of the province name the creek after his daughter.
The steamboat Gwendoline was merely a visitor to the Windermere Valley, having passed through only twice: once on her way up to Golden, and once going back down to the Kootenay River. Nonetheless, she does hold the title for being one of only two steamboats to successfully pass through the canal at Canal Flats.
